Events in Halton

Halton Village Fete

Sunday 12 September, 11 to 5

Halton Village Heritage Fete

This year, Halton Village is going to be reliving the old fete days of the 80s and 90s and hopes to continue doing this once a year. The fete will be held in the gardens of Lower Farm and Tree Tops on Sunday 12th September 11.00 – 5.00p.m.

Because this is the National Heritage weekend we are running a Vintage Bus from Tree Tops up to Halton House which will be open. There will also be vintage vehicles on display at Lower Farm which will form a procession through the village later.

There will be miniature sit-on steam train rides at Tree Tops as well as the normal stalls including Tombola, Ice Cream, Barbeque, Crafts & Gifts, Cakes, Beer Tent, Refreshment Tent, Wendover Arms Trust, a raffle and GK amusements: a roundabout, swing boats and inflatable slide – perfect for children. In addition will be the ‘Keep Clear’ jazz band, Diana Sharp will sing and Philippa Leeman of Dance & Arts will be bringing some of her ballet students for a display.

The proceeds will go to the Chiltern MS centre. The Halton Charities and the Church Fund will also benefit. This really is going to be a fun day and we hope to raise as much money for the charities as we can.

Halton House Open Day

Sunday 12 September, 10 to 4

Painting of Halton House

Commissioned by Alfred Rothschild, Halton House (HP22 5PG) was completed in 1883 and hosted many of his lavish parties. On Alfred’s death in 1918, the House was acquired by the Royal Air Force. For over 90 years it has served as the Officers’ Mess for Royal Air Force Halton.

On Sunday 12 September, in conjunction with the Heritage Open Days project, Halton House Officers’ Mess will open its doors to the public in a rare opportunity to see inside this lasting reminder of Victorian decorative style. Our team of guides, many of them serving RAF personnel, will be on hand to elaborate on the history of the House. A shuttle bus will run between the House and the Station’s Trenchard Museum. St George’s Church will also be open where there are over 100 stained glass windows and other memorabilia commemorating the RAF Halton Apprentices.

Halton House has been used extensively for filming and in 2009 was the venue for the ‘Great British Menu’ and the TV programme ‘Flog It’. The House has very limited disabled access (with no disabled toilets). Parking is available. Refreshments and souvenirs will also be on sale. Visit our website at http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafhalton/

Weston Turville

Weston Turville Future Community Led Plan

25 September 11 to 4

In keeping with other villages in Buckinghamshire a group of Weston Turville (WT) villagers have formed a steering group to promote the Community Led Plan. Guided by Community Impact Bucks this group has been formed to identify and implement potential projects for the benefit of the residents of WT. This is an opportunity for you, as a resident of WT, to forward your ideas and help to make this village a place that can be enjoyed by everyone. We have already received a suggestion from some young people as to facilities that might be provided for recreation.

WT is planning a Community Consultation Open Day on 25th September 2010 in the village hall, School Approach from 11am-4pm. During the day there will an opportunity for you to discover what activities the village has to offer. Village based organisations will be present to demonstrate what they do and when they do it. You will be able to express your views on any changes or improvements you would like to see. There will also be a limited number of tables available for those wishing to participate in a tabletop sale. Look out for further information leaflets.

Your ideas are being sought to enable us to move forward with projects, and establish whether additional funding would be available. Improvements/projects may be as simple or complex as needs dictate and may include the environment, transport and/or provision of a place for youngsters/older members of the village to meet.

Come and support your village, discuss its future over refreshments, enjoy entertainment, meet/bring your neighbours.

We aim to set out a shared vision for the future of Weston Turville by

Wendover Theatre Society

Fri & Sat 17 & 18 September

Start the autumn with a laugh watching two one-act comedy plays performed by Wendover Theatre Society in September: Brenton versus Brenton and Womberang.

Both plays are a slight departure from the society’s usual productions and patrons are advised that they contain adult humour. Benton versus Brenton is an outrageous spoof of American soaps and mini-series set in the manic world of a failing Chicago advertising agency.

Womberang is set in the waiting room of a gynaecology clinic in the Eighties and was premièred by WTS to a small audience in the spring as part of a collaboration with Halton Amateur Theatrical Society.

Director and WTS chairman Carol Blake says: "It was so well received we felt it deserved a wider audience and so we decided to perform it again as part of our September presentations. Both plays are laugh out loud productions and should provide a terrific night out."

The comedies will be performed at Wendover Memorial Hall on the evenings of Friday 17th and Saturday 18th September at 8pm. The cost of the tickets £10 and £8 (concessions) includes a Ploughmans Supper. There is also a licensed paid bar available.

To book tickets call the Box Office on 01296 696412 or call in at Wendover Tourist Office in the Clock Tower at Wendover (tel: 01296 696759). Some tickets may be available on the door on the night, but it is advisable to book.

Good things come to those who wait!

British Food Fortnight 18 September - 3 October

Logo of No2 Pound Street

I know it has taken some time – but we really hope you already love the finished product. We opened in mid-August but prior to that there wasn’t a moment to spare…including rigorous tastings to ensure we have selected the very best for you. Neil, our resident wine guru, has sampled nearly 500 wines (lucky him) and spent weeks pawing over his tasting notes to handpick the very best for No2 Pound Street - don’t worry that doesn’t mean they are going to be horribly expensive – but simply in a different league to the selection widely available. We will even have a tap serving Prosecco on the bar for filling recyclable bottles for a cool glass of fizz on your way home from work.

We will also be specializing in British delicatessen products. Cheeses will include Ribblesdale’s award winning Goat and Ewe, Keens Cheddar of international acclaim, the creamiest Cropwell Bishop Stilton and possibly even Brie from Jersey. Then there are meats; cured; dried; salamis; hams, you name it – all coming from a farm of great repute in Monmouthshire, used by many of the finest restaurants in London. Complementing this will be wild smoked salmon from Foremans – London’s last remaining salmon curing house based opposite London 2012 Olympic stadium. Also watch out for our best British vegetable recommendation.

This journey so far has shown the great sense of community in Wendover – thank you for all the support and encouragement over the last few weeks, it has made all the difference. Specific thanks to Rumseys Chocolaterie for providing us with a welcome table for cheese tasting and for offering some helpful feedback and Whitewaters for a steady supply of coffee to calm our nerves. We look forward to welcoming you in the shop or online: www.2poundstreet.com

The Kop Hill Climb

Sat & Sun 25 & 26 September

The Kop Hill Climb revival last year was a great success with over 250 entrants and 5000 spectators and the event was the overall winner of the Market Towns Awards for the South East Region and goes forward to compete for the National Award in October 2010.

The Centenary event this year will be even bigger and better with a welcome back to the car that changed history. The Brescia Bugatti Cordon Bleu, formerly owned by Raymond Mays, which caused the accident in 1925 that led to road racing being banned in UK mainland to this day, returns fully restored to open the event in 2010.

There will be an amazing array of veteran, vintage and classic cars and bikes ranging from 1903 to 1973 – a real cavalcade of motoring history – and to conclude a clutch of modern day iconic machines reflecting the motor designers art. Look out for the Dick Skipworth collection of Ecurie Ecosse racing Jaguars from the 1950’s to the oldest surviving Aston Martin A3 prototype driven by the designer Lionel Martin on Kop Hill in 1924.

Another memorable weekend is in store commemorating the glorious racing past of Kop Hill.

Tickets £5 and programmes now on sale at tourist and information centres in Aylesbury, High Wycombe, Marlow, Princes Risborough, Wendover and at the Iain Rennie shop in Princes Risborough http://www.kophillclimb.org.uk.
