Wendover Art Club
Wendover Art Club had their Spring Exhibition in the first weekend in June. We were delighted to have such a rewarding support from our local community: around 325 visitors over the weekend, and many of you joined in our “Best Painting Ballot” so here are the results:-
Our next Exhibition is on Sat 4 and Sun 5 December. We will look forward to seeing you there.
Centenary of Scouting In Wendover
Next year sees 100 years of Scouting in the village. The first recorded information was documented as a talk: "An Entertainment, in aid of the funds of the Incorporated Church Scout Patrol (local branch) will be given on Wednesday evening, 19 April 1911 in the National Schoolroom, when Mr W F Blood will show, by the aid of the lantern, 100 slides of photographs of The battlefields of Natal, including scenes in Ladysmith during the siege, Spionkop, Colenso, etc.....”
Well you may not have been here for that particular talk, but I am sure a lot of people still have fond memories of the current scout group which has operated since 1950 being restarted by Ernest Baulk (former Chairman of Wendover Parish Council) with a well loved Cub Leader Kath Lehmann running the cubs. From that point, as they say, it is history. The group has gone from strength to strength with now over 200 young people offered the chance to experience the excitement of scouting
We plan to hold several events next year, not only giving the current membership a chance to celebrate this mile stone, but also former members of the group. Watch out in Wendover news for more information or keep an eye on the group’s website www.1stwendoverscouts.co.uk.
Wendover Cricket Club
The senior side of the Club continues to do well in the Mid Bucks League and is in 2nd place in their Division with 3 matches to play. They reached the semi-finals of the League Knockout Cup but the Premier Division leaders Holmer Green proved too strong. George Robinson scored his maiden century in a recent Sunday match against Simmons in which Wendover won a high scoring game by 6 runs. The Club is running a single wicket competition on 30th August and holds its annual President's Day match on Sunday 26th September, both at the Witchell ground. Anyone interested in playing should contact Mike Harding on 01296-625147.
Christopher Pallet Village Cup
This year’s Village Cup Competition, sponsored for the 4th consecutive year by Christopher Pallet Estate Agents, attracted 10 teams from the local area. This included the introduction of two new entrants to this format of cricket; Halton Village and Dunsmorians. The teams were divided into two groups and battled it out to finish in semi-final places. The competition, which commenced in May, saw some fine batting performances, most notably from the Wellhead Old Boys, who twice this year scored more than 300 runs (they start with 200!). The weather was kind this year, forcing only one day’s cancellation due to rain.
With all the fixtures completed, the Semi-Final line-up pitched the Dragons v Wellhead Old Boys and the Rugby Dads v The Jolly Boys (who made it to the Semi-Final by virtue of 4 runs from the Halton Tennis Club). Both matches were keenly contested with the Dragons reaching the final yet again in a close match. Joining them this year were the Jolly Boys, in only their second year of competition. Finals day attracted a bumper crowd which saw the Wellhead Old Boys (and some new boys!) beat the Rugby Dads into 3rd place with a spectacular batting display. The Final started after the 3rd/4th place play-off on a sun-kissed Saturday afternoon at the Witchell. It was a match of fine fielding and bewitching batting, settled in the last over and won for the first time by the Jolly Boys! Congratulations to Andrew Tallyn and his team.
The Club would like to thank Christopher Pallet for their continued support and Bill Brown & Michael Hogg for organising this year’s competition.
If you are interested in entering a team into next year’s competition, please contact the cricket club or visit the website, www.wendovercricketclub.net
Wheelers & Dealers Square Dance Club
Belatedly we would like to introduce the Wheelers & Dealers square dance club. I’m sure that many will be surprised to find out that we have been meeting almost every week, on Tuesday evenings, for over 20 years at the Wendover Memorial Hall.
So what is square dancing?
“It is a low impact activity that involves numerous directional changes. Four couples form a square, hence its name, and dance a pattern of turning and twisting moves, called out by a 'caller'. It is accompanied by a variety of different styles of music, until they finish back with their original partner. It's not difficult to learn since basic moves are learnt quickly and others are called out as dances progress. Rests between dances allow dancers to recover.”
British Heart Foundation Magazine August 2008
For the uninitiated, modern square dancing is a unique dance form that really is suitable for everyone. Unique is a term that is often wrongly applied to many things that are simply a bit different – square dancing however, really is unique. Square dance moves are the same the whole world over – taught to the same definition and called by the same name. Square dancing is ‘called’ in English everywhere in the world. These two facts alone mean that once you have learned to square dance, you can dance anywhere where square dancing is danced. Not only in English speaking countries either – you can square dance in France, Czech Republic, Japan, China and many, many more.
Square dancing is especially ideal for those couples whose families have reached the age where they can be left to ‘do their own thing’ – those couples who are now looking for a new activity that they can share together for many years to come. Square dancing has been proved to benefit your health too and is recommended by the British Heart Foundation:–
“Cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance are improved through the continual physical movement of the activity. Calories burnt off are the equivalent of a brisk walk. Bone density and balance can improve since weight bearing and turning movements are involved. Mental agility is developed by learning and remembering moves and concentrating during the dances. Social contact is increased. Positive moods are enhanced with the social interaction and laughter that accompanies sessions.”
British Heart Foundation Magazine August 2008
If you think that square dancing is an activity for you there is a great opportunity coming up when the Wheelers & Dealers square dance club are holding a FREE “Open House” at the Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening 14th September. Join us at 8.00 o’clock for a free sample of what square dancing is all about. This free evening will be followed by a “crash course for beginners” on the next week-end – 18th and 19th September (see our ad’ elsewhere in this issue). Costing only £60 per couple for over 12 hours tuition, this week-end dramatically shortens the traditional learning time and you will be invited to join us every Tuesday evening from then on for a life-time of fun and friendship.

Wendover Junior Football Club
Wendover go on tour!
Wendover Junior Football Club participated in their 7th annual tour this year: the UK Football Festivals event at Butlin’s in Bognor Regis. A special mention should go to Sam Mcafferty (U11) and Josh Burnell (U12), who collected the competition’s individual Golden Ball Awards for their age groups, Sam scored from his own area (a goalkeeper!) and Josh as overall outstanding player of the U12 competition, (he scored 4 goals in one half!) One person makes all this possible each year. So from everyone at Wendover Junior FC, we would like to thank Jayne Howarth.
WJFC Annual 6-a-Side Tournament
On Sat & Sun 5 & 6 June, WJFC hosted their annual six-a-side competition at RAF Halton. This is arguably the largest football event in the area, boasting 202 teams. The highlights for Wendover, were our Under 9’s winning their age group against a very good Bucks CC team, and the Under 15’s, where both teams made it to the final and could only be separated by a penalty shootout. We would like to thank ALL of the parents that helped at the tournament, from marking out pitches to selling food and refreshments. We would also like to thank the coaches from Watford FC who have some fun with the Under 6 age group and finally, the Airmen from RAF Halton, whose help throughout the weekend makes the event possible. WJFC would like to thank one person who has worked tirelessly on our tournament for the last 6 years: WO Eddie Goodstadt, is the unsung hero of our tournament.
Retirements
WJFC would like to thank John Brooman for nearly 30 years service to local football in the Community. John has been Treasurer for a number of years now and has played a key role in the growth of the Junior Football Club, which has 300 players in 13 age groups. John was presented with an award at the Wendover Junior FC tournament in June in recognition of his services to Youth Football in Wendover. Good Luck John!
Our Club Chairman Mike Hogg and Club Secretary Richard Hamlyn have also stood down after many successful years at the helm of the Club. Their endeavours on behalf of young people who want to play football in Wendover and surrounding villages has been exceptional and the whole club appreciates their outstanding stewardship of the Club. Into their very large shoes step Nick Collier as our new Chair and Tom Kerr as Club Secretary.
The Club runs teams from Under 6 to Under 18 and if anyone wish to join the Club please contact Tom Kerr on 01296 614677.
